Born in Q1-1897 [Sulcoates 9d:226] to James Edwin Britton and Elizabeth HEAD (née CLARK) of 12 Somerscales Street, Sulcoates, Hull.
1901 census...John [4] was at 12 Somerscales Street, Sulcoates, Hull with his father James E Britton HEAD [37], a postman born Hull; his mother Elizabeth [38] born Saxmundham and his brothers Alfred [11]; William A [7]; sisters Beatrice [9] and Agnes [18 months]. All the children were born in Hull. 1911 census...John [14] was a 14 yrs old stablelad with trainer Charles Archer at Ellesmere House Stables, Fordham Road, Newmarket. His family and a new brother, Joseph [8], were still at 12 Somerscales Street. The pension card has his family still at 12 Somerscales Street, Beverley Road, Hull
He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds. |

The 7th Suffolks had been engaged in the Pozières region, but at the time of John's death they were, unlike the 2nd and 4th battalions,
in a relatively quiet occupied in the soldiers "favourite",training and marching. They would have detailed some parties to go off and support other
units, carrying and fixing trenches, possibly why they lost 11 men on the 18th, of whom only 2 have identified graves.
